045 - HISTORY (INTERACTIVE QUIZ EDITION)

A historic event is defined as event that was very important.

Back in February of 2018, we had our first interactive quiz. This was shortly followed up by a second, and the future was bright for our quizzing future. Then we forgot for two years.

BUT WE'RE BACK, BABY.

Come listen to us talk about badass women in history, queer people in history and a story so great that it'll make you want to poop in your trousers while on horseback.

044 - MIKE CAREY (FEAT. MIKE CAREY)

FEAR: an unpleasant emotion caused by the threat of danger, pain, or harm

Throughout this world there lives only 2 kinds of people: those who have conquered their fears, and those who are living their fears because they are forced to read about them in a book. This month, Sophie lives through her worst nightmares, we talk about Mike Carey, and then actually to Mike Carey himself.

Come listen to Mike Carey open up about his experience with Ozzy Osbourne, how both Lucifer and John Constantine got put together, and how the film adaptation of The Girl with all the Gifts interacted with the creation of the book.

Sorry in advance for the audio quality of the interview.

043 - MUSICALS (FEAT. NICK GONZO)

Over the years, we've covered musicals in bits and pieces. But we heard you: you wanted more. In this month's episode we brought on special guest Nick Gonzo to adjudicate and decide which of us has the best taste in musicals.

Come and listen to us talk about how terrible it would be to be in a musical, being a third-wheel on your own podcast and why this podcast is not as horny as you might think.

042 - THE PRE-RAPHAELITES

You think you know what art is? Oh, you sweet summer child.

What you need is to see the revolutionary Pre-Raphaelites with a style of painting that will blow your mind out of the water with its innovation and middle finger to the hoighty-toighty upper class. They will...paint models in natural light?

SOPHIE - DID YOU GIVE ME THE WRONG INFORMATION TO WRITE?

Come and listen to us talk about becoming the establishment you rebel against, whether or not you can have both authenticity and success and the podcast coins a new measure of quality.

041 - BEGIN AGAIN

Jump in your time pod and travel back to an episode where Past Mark mentioned in passing to Past Sophie that he didn't like her topic of conversation. Cut to the present and Present Sophie has conspired to have her revenge. Grab a headphone splitter (whatever that is) and listen to our new episode!

Come and listen to us talk about the reclamation of rom-com clichés, listening to music with a total stranger, how James Corden and Adam Levine are both insufferable, and the discomfort of having a different reaction to music than the characters.

Just don’t call it “authentic”.

040 - MY NEIGHBOUR TOTORO

Get off the cat bus. Hang up your leaf umbrella. Wipe away the soot gremlins. Grab a hot cup of tea, put your feet up and listen to us talk about My Neighbour Totoro.

In this episode, we talk about the definition of a comfort movie, the importance of first viewing experiences, Sophie's secret favourite genre of movie and whether or not the Russian Revolution is comforting.

039 - A KNIGHT'S TALE

Jousting is love. Jousting is life. At least that's the story that A Knight's Tale tells.

In this episode, we talk about the deliberate anachronisms, more peak 2000s aesthetic, whether or not Middle-Aged people were hot and if kidnapping does indeed equal love.

038 - COMICS

Distinguished guests. We are gathered here today to say farewell to a medium that has given Mark so much joy.

As a coda to his time reading comics, Mark talks to a crowd of talented professional comic creators about their thoughts on the state of the mainstream US publishers, the increasing cost of comics, the toxicity of the community and all of the benefits of exploring different cultures.

Thanks to everyone who gave up their time to help make this episode.

Follow all of them:

037 - LORD OF THE RINGS

I wonder if we shall ever be put into songs or tales. People will say: "Let's hear about Mark, Sophie and the Podcast!"

But they'll have left out one of the chief characters: ALL OF THE RESEARCH WE DID FOR THIS EPISODE.

Get ready to learn all about the origins of high fantasy, the influences that Lord of the Rings had on literature, how to or how to not say "Tolkein" and the information that can be gleaned by a layman reading so many graphs.

The raw information on movies mentioned in the episode.

035 - RICHARD III

This is not a joke. This is not an imaginary story. A throwaway joke made eight months ago in an episode about time travel planted the seed for a lifelong obsession with one of Britain's most hated monarchs: Richard III.

We cover audience complicity in fiction, villain classification, demonstrate our acting ability and discuss the finality death can provide to rival claimants to the throne.

034 - COMPANY

It happened: we finally quit the podcast and went on a walkabout. Everything became far too much and we decided that we need to reach back into musical theatre history to see a production of Broadway legend Stephen Sondheim's Company.

In this episode, we talk about the accuracy of recollections, the importance of a gendered perspective, the fallibility of memory, Mel and Sue vs Patti LuPone and the accessibility of theatre in a general sense.

IT'S LONDON, BABY.

033 - ROCKY

On the daily You Know What I Like jog, Mark started to uncharacteristically falter. One inspirational speech from Sophie later, the two friends found themselves trailed by a group of children, who they lead up to the top of a flight of stairs; everyone celebrated and then went on to win a group championship boxing match together.

To be perfectly honest: none of that actually happened. Instead, Mark and Sophie sit down to talk about the entirety of the Rocky franchise.

In this episode, we talk about positive masculinity, franchise fatigue, sex with robots and how Adrian's charisma measures up to a sack of potatoes.

Make sure to send Sophie your thoughts on Creed II (maybe).

032 - THE LONGEST JOURNEY

Hello. My name is Mark. I'm in a coma and this is my story. After being forcibly connected to the beta version of the Dream Machine, I was transported to another world - a parallel world - where magic is real. Yeah - I know - stay with me.

My name is Sophie. I was once the Apostle - now I'm a convicted traitor and tomorrow I die.

Actually, instead of all that complication, let's talk about The Longest Journey.

In this episode, we talk about what makes a good retcon, effective world building, our favourite sidekicks and Mark gets way too personal.

031 - LEGALLY BLONDE

Just as we were recording this episode, a girl in our sorority decided to get a perm. We tried to talk her out of it because curls weren't a good look for her, but she went ahead and did it anyway. When she entered the wet t-shirt contest, she was completely hosed down, lost all of her curls and then we all decided to sit down and watch Legally Blonde.

In this episode, we talk about the brazen nature of 2000s fashion, the wishy-washy nature of LGBT acceptance and debate whether the "romcom" is suitably named.

What? Like, it’s hard?

029 - BARBARELLA

The pill has just been invented. Miniskirts are hitting high-street shops. And top-agent Barbarella heads out into the spaceways to...be coerced into sex by a burly alien?

In this episode, we discuss the foibles and shortcomings of the most sexually liberated woman in space during the 1960s: Barbarella.

And if that's not enough to whet your appetite, we made sure to make the natural left-turn to discuss...the Vietnam war?! That's right - it's the 1991 film: Dogfight.

It's time for a discussion about gender politics in cinema!

028 - HIS DARK MATERIALS

For this month's study, Sophie and Mark took on the insurmountable task of trying to analyse one of the most popular, but immensely complex, young-adult fantasy stories in modern times: His Dark Materials.

They absolutely failed to cover everything, so make sure to send them angry tweets about everything that they missed.

027 - THE CHRONICLES OF ST. MARY'S

In this episode, Mark and Sophie finally reveal the details of the story of how they traveled into the future to discover a race of subterranean creatures. After that, they traveled into the past, got rid of the annoying bugs flittering around and rode the sound of thunder back to the present.

After that epic tale, they also find the time to talk about the time-tastic series of books: The Chronicles of St. Mary's.

Just don't ask them to explain Primer.

Long may Richard III reign.

026 - X-MEN (INTERACTIVE QUIZ EDITION)

On that fateful day, February 1st 2018, Sophie wrote up an interactive quiz for Mark about Greek Mythology. Little did she know how its effects would ripple up and down the timeline of his life with the forfeit that ensued. People laughed; people mocked; people offered him a career touring with Beyoncé.

Months passed and everything eventually returned to normal.

Now, just when she thought it was safe to go back into podcasting.
