066 - BUFFALO SOLDIERS

Jeremy is joined again by Dan Whitehead to discuss the 2003 black comedy drama Buffalo Soldiers, starring Joaquin Phoenix, Ed Harris, Anna Paquin, Scott Glenn and Elizabeth McGovern, as part of a conversation that encompasses Bilkospotting, Corporal Bueller, extreme teenage rebellion, some American obsessions and a callback to a previous episode.

065 - SILVER STREAK

Jeremy is joined again by Emmanuelle Harscouet to investigate 1976's comedy thriller Silver Streak, starring Gene Wilder, Richard Pryor, Jill Clayburgh and Patrick McGoohan, with the symposium taking in such subjects as Sunday afternoons on ITV, British Rail FM, Canadian accents and The Magic Roundabout.

The city of Cologne was founded in 38 BC by the Romans, who named their new settlement Colonia Claudia Ara Agrippinensium, referring to the vestal virgin Claudia, who saved her father from attack by plebians, and Marcus Agrippa, general of the armies of Augustus, first emperor of Rome.

Book editor George Caldwell takes a train trip from Los Angeles to Chicago and thinks that he sees a murdered man thrown from the train.

064 - THE SWIMMER

Jeremy is joined by Chris Arnsby to discuss the 1968 psychodrama The Swimmer starring Burt Lancaster and based on a story by John Cheever. This symposium includes discussion on the subjects of PEGOTs, grey flannel suits, the anticipation of sauce and the notion of twist endings.

Further reading on the film is this article from Bright Wall, Dark Room, which looks more deeply at the film.

THE SWIMMER takes place in an affluent Connecticut suburb, and for Ned Merrill (Burt Lancaster) it is where he confronts all of his dreams...and deceptions. According to Judith Crist, "Burt Lancaster gives the best performance of his career," as Ned, the troubled suburbanite, who one summer morning decides to "swim" home via the pools of his wealthy friends.

063 - REVIEW OF THE YEAR 2018

Jeremy rounds up his choices for the best and worst films of the year, assisted by Chris Arnsby and Anthony Malone, the latter joining via written notes, as together they cover such subjects as the stage version of The Exorcist, the parallel between Freddie Mercury and Neil Armstrong, Jurassic World: The Lawsuit, the distance of history and exactly what Jeremy thinks of Ernest Cline.

A listing of my previous Best Film winners (with a tie for 2003 and a four-way tie in 2004 - ask me about it sometime).

062 - HUDSON HAWK

Jeremy is joined by Anthony Malone to discuss the 1991 comedy adventure Hudson Hawk, starring Bruce Willis and newly-minted Oscar nominee Richard E. Grant. 057 - HOW TO GET AHEAD IN ADVERTISING

Jeremy and Chris Arnsby cast off the shackles of commercialism to watch How to Get Ahead in Advertising, the 1989 satire written and directed by Bruce Robinson and reuniting him with his Withnail, Richard E. Grant. Their discussion of this dark and disgusting comedy covers such rib-tickling topics as George Orwell, Franz Kafka, Sergeant Pepper, Blake's 7 and Thomas the Tank Engine.

056 - STREET FIGHTER

Jeremy is joined by comics author and gaming journalist Dan Whitehead to tackle 1994 action adventure Street Fighter, very loosely based on the video game series and starring Jean-Claude van Damme and Raul Julia. 054 - PLAY TIME

Anthony Malone joins Jeremy to discuss 1967's epic comedy Play Time, starring, co-written and directed by Jacques Tati. As they dissect the film they immediately decide is a masterpiece, they also touch on Terry Gilliam, The Prisoner, Peep Show, architectural prophecy, silent farce and all the joy of the world.

Considered by many to be Jacques Tati's masterpiece, PlayTime is a perfectly orchestrated city symphony. Shot on 70mm on a huge constructed set of concrete, glass and steel, the film was the most ambitious project Tati ever took on. Now diligently restored in-line with the filmmaker's particular, perfectionist approach, audiences can once again enjoy the expansive scope of his comic vision.
I think Jacques Tati's PlayTime is one of the unrivaled great films of all time, but rather than talk about its socio-economic commentary or its myriad of slapstick gags, let's take a minute to dive into its extraordinary (and extraordinarily fun) Royal Garden sequence, and explore the inner workings of chaos unfolding.

053 - LUCY

Jeremy is joined by Chris Arnsby to mull over the 2014 sci-fi action thriller Lucy, starring Scarlett Johansson and Morgan Freeman and written and directed by Luc Besson, in a discussion that covers such diverse topics as Ed Wood, Chris Morris, Carl Sagan and the film's 1970s remake.

052 - PRINCE OF DARKNESS

Jeremy is joined by Anthony Malone for a discussion pertaining to John Carpenter's 1987 quantum horror Prince of Darkness, starring Donald Pleasance. Their conversation covers such matters as broken-down cars, academic dissertations, future sitcom stars and Joe Pesci impressions, while Anthony is tickled by the notion of an Erich von Daniken theme park and Jeremy is interrupted by an actual ghost.

050 - SPEED & GHOSTBUSTERS (1984)

In celebration of the podcast’s 50th episode, Jeremy is joined by Tilt Araiza to invert the format and talk about two films the world loves but which he has never seen, namely the 1994 thriller Speed and the 1984 comedy horror Ghostbusters, in a discussion that covers the latest version of The Saint, films based on Disneyland rides, how to structure a screenplay, the Goodies and tranquilisers.

049 - THE LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY GENTLEMEN

As one superteam convenes on the big screen, another assembles in Cinema Limbo, as Jeremy and Ed Bloomer wade through the mire of 2003's graphic novel adaptation The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, based on the book by Alan Moore and starring Sean Connery, in a discussion that takes in Bananaman, being Whoed out and unlimited exasperation.

We didn't go into any detail on the lawsuit connected to the film which soured Moore on Hollywood, but there are some details here, here and here.

Sean Connery leads a stellar cast in this breathtaking epic adventure in which a legion of superheroes - including an immortal, a vampiress, an invisible man, a monster and a spy - must track down a madman intent on launching global Armageddon! But first they'll have to achieve the impossible - working alongside one another.

048 - EVEN DWARFS STARTED SMALL

Jeremy and Chris Arnsby take a long jump into left field for Werner Herzog's 1970 satirical fantasia Even Dwarfs Started Small, taking in crucified monkeys, hypnotised chickens and drowned rats on the way.

As well as the usual trailer and product links below, enjoy some highlights from Herzog's bizarre career.

The inhabitants of an institution in a remote country rebel against their keepers. Their acts of rebellion are by turns humorous, boring and alarming. An allegory on the problematic nature of fully liberating the human spirit, as both commendable and disturbing elements of our nature come forward.

This piece of video already exists on Youtube, but those do not include English subtitles. As there are many non Germans out there who would like to know what the hell they are talking about I uploaded this. The video is taken from Werner Herzog's documentary "My Best Fiend".
In 1979, Les Blank took a detour to film German filmmaker Werner Herzog honoring a vow he made to Errol Morris that he (Herzog) would eat his shoe if Morris ever actually made one of his films he was forever talking about.
In this scene, Herzog is bored to tears talking to a penguin expert so he asks the seemingly flippant question, "Can a penguin go insane?" Yet the very next scene we see just that - out of a swarm of penguins heading to the mating grounds a lone dissenter makes make a sharp right and head towards the mountains in a full-speed waddle.

046 & 047 - REVIEW OF THE YEAR 2017

Jeremy is joined by both Chris Arnsby and Antony Malone as they present their thoughts on the last year in movies. In the first part of this epic adventure, they tussle with Bananaman, stand-up comic David Bowie, all the Draculas and enjoy a libel that was cut before release.

Jeremy, Chris Arnsby and Antony Malone continue their journey through the last year in film, as Chris pursues a family vendetta, Jeremy insults Mexico and Antony is hypnotised by a French screen legend.
